Healthcare services impersonated in job scams

A range of healthcare organisations across Australia are being impersonated, from major teaching hospitals to small regional clinics. Typically the scam includes some or all of the following:

  • Scammers contact job seekers with promises of employment at the impersonated business. This may occur via a fake job advertisement, or by direct contact on WhatsApp, etc.
  • Overseas based workers looking to migrate to Australia are particularly targeted with offers of assistance with visas, flights, and accommodation.
  • The scammers demand upfront fees for “pre-employment services,” such as accreditation, background checks, application processing, or equipment. Scammers have also requested large amounts of personal information and copies of passports, driver’s licences, Medicare cards, and bank cards.
  • Once the victim pays these fees or provides personal information, the scammer demands more money and/or breaks off communication.

The National Anti-Scam Centre is currently leading a project to address job and employment scams and is collaborating on disruption efforts with social media platforms, banks, law enforcement, recruitment agencies, and impersonated businesses.

Further information on how you can protect your organisation from impersonation scams can be found on the Scamwatch website
