The Board of Day Hospitals Australia is seeking a dynamic specialist surgeon or physician with corporate governance expertise to join the Board in the role of Chairperson.

Day Hospitals Australia is a member based organisation which is acknowledged as the peak industry body representing the private day hospital sector.  Over the last 5 years it has grown significantly in size.  Today approximately 200 private day hospitals (representing two thirds of the industry nationally) are members. Total membership (including all categories of members) stands at approximately 292 members.

The vision of Day Hospitals Australia is to work collaboratively with its membership to provide advocacy, knowledge, support and add value so as to increase the recognition of the contribution that the day hospital sector provides to the Australian healthcare system.

The organisation employs a CEO as well as three part time staff.  Members contribute to some of the organisation’s work on a voluntary basis.

A strategically focused Board working closely with its CEO & staff and with an engaged membership is seen as key to the organisation’s ongoing success.

This position is ideally suited to an experienced specialist surgeon or physician who is passionate about the health sector and who is willing to publically advocate for the role of day hospitals in the Australian Health Care System.  It is important that applicants have the time available to devote to this role and have an understanding of the current and future challenges facing the sector.  It is anticipated that the role will commence towards the end of February 2019.

The successful applicant will have well developed existing networks with the Federal Government, opposition parties and Specialist Colleges. In addition, it is envisaged that the person selected will currently be located in Canberra, Sydney, Melbourne or Brisbane.

The Chairperson will be required to chair monthly Board meetings.  Board papers are prepared by the CEO and approved by the Chairperson.  The majority of Board meetings are held via teleconference with approximately two meetings a year being held on a face to face basis at agreed locations.  The Chairperson will be required to support and assist the CEO and/or individual Directors in relevant matters where indicated.

The Chairperson will also be required to open and attend our annual national conference.

In addition to meeting all out of pocket expenses, an annual honorarium of $12,000 ex GST will be payable.
